Ulladulla surfing star Kirstie Jones clocked up strong results to progress through to second round of the World Junior Surfing Championships in France last night.
The talented teen is competing with the Australian team against surfers from around the world and the Australian team is already living up to the high expectation, with all surfers making it through to further rounds.
People across the area can show Kirstie their support via SMS with a special message service set up for the Aussie team.
TravelSIM, who provide International Sim Cards for Mobile Phones, are inviting supporters to send free SMS messages to team members.
To send a free SMS, go to www.travelsim.net.au/surf_profiles.php and follow the prompts.
Kirstie progressed to the second round in the under 18 girls last night after a strong win in her first heat.
Though nervous about the competition, Kirstie was excited to be surfing in her first major overseas championships.
"I am pretty nervous about the competition but excited to be going," she said
"It is my first international competition, which is exciting."
Kirstie, the daughter of Tracey and Darryl Jones, has been focusing on her surfing throughout the past few months, moving up to third on the Australian junior rankings.
"My surfing has been steadily improving over the past few months and I am hoping to be able to surf my best while I'm in France," she said.
The Australian team went in to the nine-day competition the hot favourites after Aussie surfers and team members Gareth Parkes and Sally Fitzgibbons won their divisions in the 2007 comp.
Kirstie was picked for the Australian team in February and has been a member of the Billabong girls team for the past year.
"It is great having sponsors on board to help support all the travel it takes to compete on the junior circuit."
Kirstie is sponsored locally by Vern Jackson surfboards and Isis Egyptian Day Spa along with Billabong, Gallaz and Otis.
The competition concludes this Sunday, June 1.
