Golfers flock to Mollymook

23/07/2008 12:14:00 PM
Dozens of young golfers flocked to Mollymook last week for the Jack Newton Junior State Age Championships and, held for the first time, the South Coast Cadet Classic. The event, held between the Mollymook Golf Cluob and the Catalina Country Club in Bateman's Bay, saw some of New South Wales best golfers go head to head across various age groups.

State Age Results

What a final day was played last week, after a week of golf at the Mollymook Golf Club and the Catalina Country Club.

The boys’ championship was not decided until the final hole of what was a fantastic week of golf.

Michael Williams (St Michaels) played the final hole in regulation par to hold of Jordan Zunic (Bonnie Doon) by one shot to take the overall title of Foundation Champion and the 17 years Age Champion title.

The girls’ event was completely dominated by Justine Lee (The Australian).

After winning the Junior Champion of Champions event on Monday, Justine went on to win the State Junior Girls title and the 16 years age title by a massive 15 strokes.

The quality of the field was high with players of the caliber of Monica Jung and Ashley Ona but Justine’s 6 under par for the final 36 holes was just too good.

Justine capped off a memorable week with a win in the 2008 Junior Derrin averages title.

Local standouts include Robert Gregg who took the Nett Champion in the 17 years boys division and Tegan Nash, who was the 12 years girls Nett Champion.

South Coast Cadet Classic

For the first time in the history of the foundation’s annual Subaru State Junior Golf Age Championships, they conducted a South Coast Cadet

Classic for children beginning in golf that do not hold an official golf handicap.

The event was held over two days of the main event on the last Thursday and Friday.

Children played nine holes at Catalina Country Club on the Thursday and another nine at Mollymook Beachside on the Friday.

Results were for each day, as well as an overall competition for both days.

The children had a wonderful time.

At Catalina Jack Newton spoke to all as a group and then watched each child commence play.

Jack gave golf tips to all and posed for very memorable photographs with them.

Jack is well known for his support for golf, particularly with primary school level children.

The event was played in great spirit, all children making new friends.

One particular note is the attendance on the Friday event of Noah Alexander.

Noah is a six-year-old from just outside the district.

He is very small in stature and his parents advise that he is besotted with golf.

His grandparents gave him a child’s set of plastic clubs for his first birthday and he has not stopped.

His practice consists of a bucket in the backyard pool that he practices chipping into.

Needless to say, at this stage, the pool needs clearing of balls from time to time.

The results were:

THURSDAY - CATALINA

Scratch winner Jamie Jankalovski (Mollymook) 47; Nett winner Lachlan Brooks (Mollymook) 37; Nett Runner Up Zeke Boddington (Mollymook) 38.

FRIDAY - MOLLYMOOK BEACHSIDE

Scratch winner Billy Alves (Catalina) 45; Nett winner Thomas Punnet (Mollymook) 37; Net Runner Up Harrison Clout (Catalina) 39.

18 Hole event

Scratch winner Billy Alves (Catalina) 94, Runner Up Jamie Jankalovski (Mollymook) 95; Nett winner Lachlan Brooks (Mollymook) 73 ½, Runner Up Zeke Boddington (Mollymook) 74 ¾.

Our thanks go to both Catalina and Mollymook Beachside for their support of this inaugural event.

It is proposed to again hold the event next year when the Subaru State Age Championships return.
