Visit sets new record

THE Red Cross Blood Bank visited the Ulladulla area last week and left on Friday singing the praises of local residents.

The Blood Bank visits the area each month and last week recorded its most successful trip yet.

Over the four days in town, more than 250 donations were collected, a jump on the previous record and a huge increase from the bank's last visit.

"It has been an absolutely wonderful week," Red Cross Blood Service spokesperson Richard Webb told the Times.

"Ulladulla would be our best regular site we visit.

"With 250 donations, the people of Ulladulla have had the chance to help 750 people through blood products."

Mr Webb said the impressive result cam after a disappointing April visit with wet weather and colds and flu driving many donors away.

"We were a little disappointed with our last visit, but this one has been record breaking," Mr Webb said.

"Winter is normally a tough time to encourage donors, so we are even more impressed to have had so many people through despite the cold.

"Most collection centres struggle at this time."

Considering the small size of the area, Mr Webb said the service was always amazed at the numbers that come through the Blood Bank.

"Ulladulla resident donate more blood than we get from large towns like Nowra," he said.

"It is a wonderful achievement by the community and they definitely deserve praise."

Blood Bank nurse unit manager Luek Neven praised the Ulladulla community.

"We again had an excellent response," he said.

"We love coming to Ulladulla.

"Donors here give us so much cheek and make it a very fun place to come and visit."

Mr Neven said the Blood Bank has many regular donors and is always pleased to see new faces.

"Many of our regulars bring along friends and family," he said.

"Every regular donor is an asset to the service, but new donors will help the service to continue to help people across Australia.

"For new donors, it is a learning curve, but once you get over that first hurdle of donating blood, we get many who return.

"Not every person can donate blood.

"It takes someone special to donate."

The Red Cross Blood Service mobile unit will next visit Ulladulla from October 28 through to October 31.

Appointments can be made online at www.donateblood.com.au or through the toll free number 13 14 95.
