TONGUES have been wagging over the past few months on the numbers of babies born locally.
While doctors can confirm there has been a high number of babies born over the past few months, children's clothing and giftware stores have been surprised with the number of newborns.
Rapt Bratz owners Chrissy Basile and Rose Rean had both noticed the large number of people buying for newborns.
"There has definitely been more newborns than usual over the past few months," Chrissy told the Times.
"It can be hard to tell, as we sell a range of clothing, kids accessories and toys and do get visitors buying, but even our customers have been commenting on how many babies they have noticed."
Both Rose and Chrissy said people had been talking about all the babies born over the past few months both locally at Milton Hospital and at Shoalhaven Hospital.
"It seems over the past few months there has been lots of girls born, but that can all change in a matter of weeks," Rose said.
"We have also noticed lots of people buying clothes in the smallest sizes like four and five 0 so it seems there has been quite a few smaller size babies born as well."
The number of twins born has been the biggest surprise to the two.
"It seems like there has been heaps of twins born lately," Chrissy said.
"It is strange because you generally only see a few sets of twins each year but it seems like there have been quite a few sets of twins born over the past few months."
The number of babies born had both girls questioning what happened nine months ago and wondered if the increased baby bonus was a factor.
"It does make you counting back nine months to see what was happening," Rose said with a laugh.
"Maybe it was really cold or raining for a few weeks."
Wrapt Gifts owner Kylie Creech agreed there had been lots of twins born and said she had also noted many people having their second or third child.
"We have had lots of shoppers looking for the right gift for a second or third child," Kylie said.
Kylie also said the shopping habits of family and friends buying gifts for newborns was changing.
"The traditional items like money boxes and pictures frames are still selling, but many people are opting for different gifts, like nice kids' dinner sets, collectable model cars and planes and more modern gifts," Kylie said.
"They are buying more practical and fun things."
