Christmas comes early at youth centre

IT would be easy to think it was Christmas time when visiting the Ulladulla Youth Centre over the past week with kids working hard to create unique wooden decorations.

Created from old Santa cut-outs donated by the Ulladulla Milton Lions Club, the brightly coloured decorations are being created to decorate the Youth Centre on St Vincent Street for Christmas.

Youth Centre coordinator Jody Quinell was excited about the response to the project.

"After putting a story in the Times and letting the schools know what we were up too, we were overwhelmed by the number of kids who came along to take part in the project," Jody said.

"It was a great project and a good chance for younger kids to see all the centre has to offer."

Both Jody and fellow youth worker Mark Ettridge were excited to build further links between the youth centre and the community.

"The project was a wonderful step towards bridging the gap between the different ages with the younger kids getting help from some of the older centre regulars and from members of the Lions club," Mark said.

Lions members spent hours at the centre each Wednesday over the holidays to help cut out the new Christmas decoration shapes.

"The Lions have been fantastic throughout this whole project," Jody said.

"Without their generous donation of the old Santas to kick start the idea and their help throughout the project we would not have been able to run the project.

"We are very grateful and hope to be able to continue this strong relationship with the Lions club."

The project saw kids design and decorate large wooden Christmas decoration, made from the old Santas the Lions used to decorate the town.

Kids got together to pick out designs and paint them in bright colours.

The Ulladulla Youth Centre will be running the program again in the October school holidays and hope to see some new and returning faces to help create more decorations.

All the hard work will culminate with a big Christmas celebration at the Youth Centre on St Vincent Street on December 23, with the wooden decorations to be used to decorate the building.
